What is a fansub?

How do I download files?

For the Bittorrent method: Simply visit our Download page and click on your desired listed episode(s) to download the bittorrent (BT) file for that episode(s). Use a BT client to download the video to your computer using the BT file.

For the IRC bot method: Download an IRC client, connect to our IRC channel #SARS-Fansubs @ irc.rizon.net
Register your nick, then go to this link, click the desired episode, copy the code from the pop-up and finally paste the code into your IRC client.
For common issues related to IRC, go to this forum support thread.

For direct download links: Register at our forums. A secret Direct Downloads area will appear under News and Announcements. A majority of the links are hosted on Megaupload, a few are hosted on Rapidshare. There is a limit on how much you can download for free users. Please do not request any files to be uploaded. This method was only meant for files that are not heavily seeded on torrents. Warning: Not all releases will be available.
PS. You’ll need 25 posts to make this secret forum appear! Once you hit 25 posts, it will magically appear. :)

How do I report dead links?

Register on our forums and post the dead link here. 99% of the time torrent links are not dead. People make the mistake of confusing poorly seeded torrents = dead link.

My downloaded file isn’t playing correctly or doesn’t play at all. How can I fix it?

First check to see if the file you downloaded is corrupt. To do this, download an MD5/CRC hash check program. Google it. After installing your MD5/CRC program, check the downloaded SARS file and take note of the code that pops up. Go to our forum and compare it to this thread. If your code matches, nothing is wrong with the file and your problem lies with your codec/hardware settings. If it doesn’t match, re-download the file again with another method.

What is Bittorrent? (BT) – (Info is from: http://dessent.net)

BitTorrent is a protocol designed for transferring files. It is peer-to-peer in nature, as users connect to each other directly to send and receive portions of the file. However, there is a central server (called a tracker) which coordinates the action of all such peers. The tracker only manages connections, it does not have any knowledge of the contents of the files being distributed, and therefore a large number of users can be supported with relatively limited tracker bandwidth. The key philosophy of BitTorrent is that users should upload (transmit outbound) at the same time they are downloading (receiving inbound.) In this manner, network bandwidth is utilized as efficiently as possible. BitTorrent is designed to work better as the number of people interested in a certain file increases, in contrast to other file transfer protocols.

One analogy to describe this process might be to visualize a group of people sitting at a table. Each person at the table can both talk and listen to any other person at the table. These people are each trying to get a complete copy of a book. Person A announces that he has pages 1-10, 23, 42-50, and 75. Persons C, D, and E are each missing some of those pages that A has, and so they coordinate such that A gives them each copies of the pages he has that they are missing. Person B then announces that she has pages 11-22, 31-37, and 63-70. Persons A, D, and E tell B they would like some of her pages, so she gives them copies of the pages that she has. The process continues around the table until everyone has announced what they have (and hence what they are missing.) The people at the table coordinate to swap parts of this book until everyone has everything. There is also another person at the table, who we’ll call ‘S’. This person has a complete copy of the book, and so doesn’t need anything sent to him. He responds with pages that no one else in the group has. At first, when everyone has just arrived, they all must talk to him to get their first set of pages. However, the people are smart enough to not all get the same pages from him. After a short while they all have most of the book amongst themselves, even if no one person has the whole thing. In this manner, this one person can share a book that he has with many other people, without having to give a full copy to everyone that’s interested. He can instead give out different parts to different people, and they will be able to share it amongst themselves. This person who we’ve referred to as ‘S’ is called a seed in the terminology of BitTorrent.

What is a Bittorrent Client?

A bittorent client is software that allows you to download files using torrent files. The official bittorrent client can be found at http://www.bittorrent.com and other clients can be found easily by searching google with keywords like “bittorrent clients.” They are programmed in different languages including Python, C++ and even Java. Each client varies between options and controls, but all will allow you to download our videos using BT files. Python is the language used for the offiicial bittorrent client. However C++ clients tend to use the least of your computer resources while Java uses the most resources. Try different clients out to find which you feel is the best.

What do I need to watch the videos?

You will need a media player such as Windows Media Player or Quicktime as well as the required codecs.

Go Up

What is a codec?

A codec can be thought of as a driver for your media player. Codecs are used to compress video files into smaller video files. Popular codecs include DIVX and XVID. To watch videos that have been compressed using a codec, you will need to download and install those corresponding codecs. You can find different codecs for download at http://www.divx-digest.com.

How often do you update?

Since the members of the SARS-Fansub group do have lives outside of fansubbing we cannot always update as frequently as we wish. Updates will be added as soon as they are ready for download. Please visit frequently for updates.

For step-by-step updates, follow us on Twitter.

Are fansubs legal?

Yes. However, if the series you are watching become licensed in your area, please stop distribution of said series. Here at SARS-Fasubs we provide files that are not currently licensed, these are “by fans for fans” files and remain legal in your area as long as they remain unlicensed in your area.

Can I get subbed files, timed files, raw files, [insert any raw files not available on the site] from you?

Nope. Recently, there’s been a number of requests for subbed files, timed files, and raw files. Although we would like to help your group sub in another language, our main goal here is to provide ENGLISH SUBBED content. We have no way of checking the work that other groups do in another language. So, we wouldn’t want our group name to be associated with (excuse the language) crap. We also have no control over how these assets would be handled if they were leaked out. For all we know, you could be some infamous bootlegger trying to make a quick buck on eBay. >_< We've already done our part of sharing these wonderful dramas in ENGLISH to the community. Please respect our decision on this and don't make us feel bad for not helping you out (you know who you are)!

Although if you’re translating a series into another language, you’re free to use the hardsubbed releases as a reference. Please contact amrayu via the contact page to let her know. If you’re fine with using the hardsubbed releases, please credit accordingly.

The subs aren’t appearing when I watch the video, what should I do?

Most of our files here are hardsubbed, so this wouldn’t be a problem. Dating Now is the only series that is soft-subbed starting at episode 8 till the end of the series. In order to view these files, your video player needs a soft-sub plugin. For Windows Media Player users, download Vobsub and follow these instructions. Another alternative is to download Media Player Classic or VLC player which already include the soft-sub plugin.

I represent another fansub group. Can we use your translations as a base to translate into another language?

Personally, I am against this because translations can get lost in the process. But if you must use our translations, feel free to do so if you’re fine with using the hardsub releases–this means no softsubs or timings will be provided from us. Also please credit SARS-Fansubs if you do so.

Can I repost your video files at [insert any site name here... Youtube, Veoh, Google Video, my own site]?

It’s a NO for Untouchable. A good rule of hand is to see if the file(s) is available on Bittorrent at D-addicts.com. If a series is not available on Bittorrent on D-addicts, please do not repost.

NOTE: The following passage pertains to older files that are available on Bittorrent at D-addicts.com.
Yes and no. We appreciate all the support and understand your desire to share our files with other people. With that said, we really can’t control how our files are re-distributed. But if you do repost our files on another site, as a common courtesy, contact us via email or at the forums first and credit EXACTLY as the following: www.SARS-Fansubs.com. A generic SARS Fansubs, SARS tag doesn’t cut it either (there’s a dash in our group name)! We want fans to be redirected back to the site so they can experience other dramas from the source.

Go Up

If I repost your series on my site can you link back to my site?

Maybe. We appreciate your enthusiasm to share our files. But reposting a series doesn’t help us in the grand scheme of things. Hosting files elsewhere means there’s fewer seeders and downloaders for the bittorrent releases. For potential affiliate linkage, please contact amrayu at the forums.

Go Up

Can you fansub [insert any drama title here]?

You’re free to recommend any series that you would like to see fansubbed at our forums at this thread. As for actually fansubbing the series recommended, that depends on our resources, and the current release queue.

Why on earth did you guys name yourselves SARS-Fansubs? You know it’s a horrible disease, right?

This question has been asked a million times. SARS-Fansubs stands for… Search And Rescue Subbers. Yes, we’re aware that it’s also a serious disease and we’re not poking fun at it.

Do you guys have an IRC channel?

Yes! Come chat with some of the staff or other drama lovers here.
Server: irc.rizon.net
Channel: #SARS-Fansubs
If you have problems downloading any file via Bittorrent, try the IRC channel. Most of the files are being served there as well.
