We’re back from our hiatus! It’s been a long time and we’ve been enjoying our time off… catching up on dramas, TV, books, anime, and life!

Now down to business:

Fansubbing: Yes, we’re working on something right now that’s from the current season. I’ll let you guys guess what it is.
File distribution: Torrent is our only viable source at the moment. I’m wary of using any of the free hosting sites since the Megaupload debacle. If you have any suggestions, feel free to comment below.
File format: Our new project will use a new format!

PS. Kaeru no Oujo-sama is an awesome series–(that we’re not subbing)! LOL! Watch it if you can because BOSS (aka. Amami Yuki) is in it.

Scary Times: MegaUpload shutdown, SOPA, PIPA and ACTA

GYABOOOOOO!!!

As some of you may have heard, MegaUpload.com, a popular filesharing service was shut down last week. I won’t rehash the whole story, but let’s just say MegaUpload.com was indicted on charges of copyright infringement. You can read the story here. The timing of the shutdown was right on the heels of the SOPA/PIPA protest which has caused quite a stir on the interwebs. The timing is definitely odd and scary, but I’ve heard reports that it was a mere coincidence. As a result of the MegaUpload shutdown, several companies in the same industry have scaled back their services.

Here’s an excerpt from Readwriteweb.com of the effects so far:

Popular sites like FileSonic and FileServe are preventing users from downloading files uploaded by anybody other than themselves. Uploaded.to, another service used for hosting and sharing files, has stopped accepting users from U.S.-based IP addresses all together. In total, Evolver.fm’s Eliot Van Buskirk counted nine different file-hosting services that have made some kind of substantial change to their functionality since the MegaUpload shutdown.

So, how does this affect the drama community?
Several ways…

Direct download links are somewhat harder to download from now because other filesharing sites are spooked by the MegaUpload shutdown.
Links to files uploaded to MegaUpload are now dead. All that bandwidth and time spent uploading… down the drain.
Fansubbers/downloaders who relied on these services will need to look for alternatives like torrent or IRC.
Streaming sites like DramaCrazy and MySoju can’t say they are legally protected by the “safe harbor” provision of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). MegaUpload a legitimate business used the same excuse, but that didn’t stop the Feds from shutting them down. And let’s be honest here, we all know they’re uploading and posting the content on their sites.
Popular torrent sites have been under heavy fire lately too. So, D-addicts.com is likely at risk.

The MegaUpload shutdown has definitely affected many of our releases here, but all hope is not lost! More recent releases were uploaded to MultiUpload which propagated the files to other free filesharing sites. So, if you’re here to download from the DDLs on this page here, ignore the MegaUpload links and download from MultiUpload.

Will we reupload releases to replace the MegaUpload links? I think the best thing to do now is to let the dust settle a bit before wasting resources to replace MegaUpload links. If you’re desperate, there’s always torrent. We may enlist YOUR help with reuploads in the future. Please help us if it comes down to that.

What are your thoughts on the whole situation? Scary? Not so scary? Business as usual?

Holiday gifts for your drama addict

I know it’s somewhat late, but there’s technically more than a day left to get your Christmas shopping done! Here’s a quick list of potential gifts that you can buy for that special drama addict in your life.

(Not listed in any particular order)

1. A subscription to a streaming service.
Several subscription based services are now available in the US with Korean and Japanese content. Only a small amount of Japanese dramas are available (probably because of licensing issues), but there’s a vast library of Korean dramas.

Here’s a list of some of the streaming services available:
Netflix.com, features some Korean dramas, many Japanese and Korean movies as well. Prices start as low as $7.99 for 1 month.

Hulu.com, similar drama library as Netflix. Hulu subscriptions start at $7.99 per month also.

DramaFever.com, vast Korean drama library and limited Japanese drama titles. DramaFever is relatively new to the streaming game and their plans are also the lowest, starting at $4.99 per month. Their Christmas deal for 1 year is currently $39.99! A $60 savings. Offer good till 1/31/12.

Crunchyroll.com, mostly anime-centric, but there’s a number of Korean and Chinese dramas. Not as cheap as DramaFever, but Crunchyroll plans start at $6.95 per month for full access to either Anime or Drama content. There’s a combined subscription for both Anime and Drama for $11.95 per month.

2. A streaming media player.
There’s only 2 streaming media players that I would recommend because of compatibility with downloaded files.
First is the Western Digital TV (WD TV for short). There’s 2 models, WD TV Live which doesn’t come with a built-in hard drive, but includes WiFi (retails for $129.99, on Amazon for $89.99), or WD TV Live Hub which comes with a 1TB built-in hard drive, but doesn’t include WiFi (retail $199.99, on Amazon for $179.00). The great thing about the WD TV devices are the various apps like Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll via Flingo, Youtube and many more that give you instant access to content. Not only that, the WD TV can hook into your local network so you can stream video files to your TV. Another advantage are the 2 USB ports that allow access to external hard drives.

I personally own the WD TV Live Hub with the 1TB hard drive and I’m loving it so far. The device has played 98% of my downloaded video files so far, not to mention video files with softsubs! The only main drawback is the lack of built-in WiFi, but that’s easily solved with the purchase of a USB WiFi adapter. I’d recommend buying a mini USB WiFi adapter so it doesn’t become an eyesore. Be sure to checkout this list of compatible USB WiFi adapters beforehand.

The other streaming device that is hot this season is the Roku. Prices are as low as $49.99 for the entry model, the LT. The Roku interface isn’t as slick as the WD TV, but the main advantage are the various channels available on Roku. Here’s just a sample of what they have.

Does your drama addict prefer downloading their dramas? Then get the WD TV. WD TV has been out for quite awhile and the file format support is superb.

Does your drama addict prefer streaming instead? Then get the Roku coupled with a subscription service.

3. Storage.
This is probably a no-brainer. Most drama addicts download a ton of video files and storage is always an issue, so buy them an external USB hard drive or a spindle of blank DVDRs. A Western Digital 1TB USB hard drive is $119.99 on Amazon, while a 100 DVD-R spindle goes for $28.00 on Amazon.

4. An updated laptop or desktop or HDTV LCD/LED.
Most drama addicts watch dramas on their laptop or desktop and what’s more frustrating is watching dramas on a laggy out-of-date computer. The faster the better.
HDTV LCDs and LEDs are a lot more affordable now, so help your addict by upgrading their tube TV. LCDs/LEDs are energy efficient and some even come Internet-ready. The DNLA feature is also handy for local network access to your files.

5. Language lessons.
Wouldn’t it be nice to not rely on English subtitles? Wouldn’t it be nice to not wait on fansubbers/translators?
Of course!
Give your addict the building blocks to learn Japanese or Korean by buying language lessons or books or subscription services for them.
Here’s some sites for starters:
TextFugu.com for Japanese only, MangoLanguages.com, RosettaStone.com, and Pimsleur.com.

6. A trip to South Korea and/or Japan.
For you high rollers out there, buy your drama addict a trip to South Korea and/or Japan and experience the culture! Prices for tickets and hotels range, so ask Google-sensei to assist you on this.

In the meantime, I’m doing some Spring cleaning of my collection of dramas, movies, and toys. I’m at a point in my life where I just want to get rid of stuff. What’s this Peepo Peepa Peepee nonsense?
Nodate, Osawa and Morioka are saluting wearing silly headgear in this episode. Peepo, Peepa, Peepee are mascots for the Tokyo Metro Police Department. They have big ears to listen to the citizens’ voices, big eyes to watch every corner in society, and antenna to catch movement in society!

Episode 3:
Why does Nodate call Rika by the nickname Ricky?
He actually calls her Rika-rin in Japanese, which sounds cutesy since she’s so young. So instead of directly translating it as Rika-rin, I went with “Ricky” which has the same effect in English.

What’s the significance of the cherry blossom tree in Naoki’s drawing?
Cherry blossom trees bloom in spring. They also signify a time of birth and renewal.

Episode 6:
Why does Boss and Iwai speak Korean in this episode?
Korean pop boy band 2PM makes a guest appearance in this episode, so Boss and Iwai are infected by the Korean Wave bug making them speak intermittent Korean. ^_^

Episode 7:
Boss speaks weird in one scene with Tadokoro about a naughty child, why?
I had to change the spelling of a couple words to make her dialogue seem off.
That’s why I added the “z” at the end. She was speaking like a little kid because she was pretending to be a little kid.

Episode 8:
Boss is set up on a “blind date” in this episode, but the word in Japanese is actually “omiai”–a pre-arranged marriage date. It’s basically a date in hopes of getting married. I opted to translate it as “blind date” since most Westernized countries have no concept of this. Also “pre-arranged marriage date” is wordy compared to the original word, “omiai”!

I know I haven’t been involved with SARS in a year or so, but I want to thank you for posting this, and I would like to thank anyone who has doanted.

I live in Sendai, and lived in Ishinomaki until last year. My family and I are all okay, but I lost several former students, my in-laws lost their country house (they can’t even find where the tsunami carried it to), and the tsunami was a meter high at my old house. Several friends in Ishinomaki, Minamisanriku, and Kesennuma lost cars, houses, businesses, possessions, pets, relatives… At this point, near all of my friends are out of shelters, mostly staying with relatives, but there are still over a hundred thousand people sleeping in school gyms and community centers, a month later.

As time passes, it’s easy to forget about the tragedies that occured far far away a month ago, but we are still just at the very beginning of rebuilding. If anyone sees this, it is still not too late to donate. Everyone here really appreciates it.

Synopsis: Kazuyuki Yamamura works at a major advertising agency, and is the breadwinner of his family, which consists of himself, wife Miki, and daughter Rie. He purchases a house, and is proud of being at the pinnacle of his career.
Kazuyuki’s neighbor, Yusuke Sugio, however, leads a completely different life. The breadwinner of his family is his wife Shoko, who runs her own company. Yusuke is a so-called “at-home dad”, and because of this, Kazuyuki considers him miserable and helpless.
Suddenly one day, Kazuyuki is forced to quit his company. At the same time, his wife receives a call from her former employer saying he wants her to come back to work. Site, Forum Maintenance and Fansub Projects

As you can see from the new look and feel of the site, we’re going through a major rehaul.

Site Update

Much of the older content on the site has been wiped out (well, not really, we still have a back up of that), but the main reason for this was the outdated design and ENDLESS spam that infested the comments and forums. A few posts on the site had several thousand spam comments! Anyway, the most important pages (ie. Torrents, IRC bots, FAQs) have been reposted and should be fully functional. A few less important pages like the donation and staff pages were posted too, but need some tweaking still. These pages will be fixed in the next few days.

Forum Update

Sadly, the forum was not maintained either, so posts were riddled with ads for porn, prescription drugs, shoes and all sorts of nonsense! In order to stop all of the spam, I took the forum offline for a few days to clean it up and update the forum software. The update itself was a little painful because the SQL backup didn’t import over nicely, but all is well now.
I’ve debated with myself about keeping the forum open for users to come and be part of a drama community–which was always the intention. But now that I’ve reassessed the pros and cons, I’ve decided that we’ll shut it down. It’s too much maintenance that no one on the team has time for.

So here’s a break-down of what will happen to the forum:

No new registrations, posts, comments, blah blah.
Existing fully registered users still have access to their accounts (private messages, profiles, etc)
Everyone can access and search the threads for archival purposes
Direct Download Links category is still only viewable by users with 25+ posts
Eventually the Direct Download Links thread will migrate to the main site www.sars-fansubs.com
All existing threads have been locked
Unconfirmed users will not be confirmed, but if you want access to the DDL page, please wait till it migrates over to the main site

Just think of the forum being stuck in time and it’s been filed away for posterity.
IF enough people feel compelled to keep the forum around, please speak up and I may reconsider. But with the advent of Twitter, FaceBook and other social media sites, I don’t see the purpose of keeping the forum alive. Besides this site was created to provide news and updates about fansub projects. I’d like to focus my efforts on fansubbing and not deleting pr0n threads in a forum.

The earthquake and subsequent tsunami that occurred on 3/11 in Japan was horrific and terrifying to watch. Thousands of lives have been lost and thousands more are still missing. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced and have been surviving in make-shift shelters.
